The rules that come with them
- Roam abroadRoam Unlimited generally allows up to 30 days outside the registered home country at a time. Eligible home accounts traveling within the US/Canada territory group or listed European group are exempt from this limit, though extended use can require localization. Travel Registration is generally required outside the home country, except Enterprise. Shorter local limits may apply. Source, checked October 23, 2026.
- Roam 50/100/300GB scopeOther Roam plans are for the home country or eligible grouped region. Local Priority currently includes up to 60 consecutive international days; the change to Business with 30 days takes effect December 1, 2026, not yet on October 23. Source, checked October 23, 2026.
- BoatsRoam Unlimited needs Ocean Mode beyond 12 nautical miles. Without it, territorial-water use is limited to five consecutive days and 60 days per year. Ocean Mode removes those duration limits, but all data is billed per GB while enabled, including on land, until switched off; it can remain on across billing cycles. Check account pricing and local maritime authorization. Source, checked October 23, 2026.
- In motion on landDo not rely on a universal five-country list. Specialized Starlink guidance restricts land in-motion use in Costa Rica, Colombia and Spain as well as other markets. General and specialized help pages conflict, and even the specialist page has differing lists. Confirm country, plan, hardware and land versus maritime authorization before using it while moving; stop the vehicle if uncertain. Source, checked October 23, 2026.
- Roam 50GB instead of 100GBOnly Roam 50GB (no 100GB) is offered in: Austria, Hungary, Croatia, Bangladesh, Botswana, Brunei, Cape Verde, Costa Rica, DR Congo, Gambia, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Maldives, Mozambique, Nigeria, Oman, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Togo, Tonga, United Arab Emirates, Zambia, Zimbabwe. Source, checked October 18, 2026.
- Standby ModeEligible plans can switch to Standby Mode for low-speed service up to 500 Kbps at the account’s displayed fee. It is not normal broadband or in-motion service. Some countries instead offer free zero-data pause for Roam/Priority and no Residential pause. Promotions, rentals and hardware exceptions apply; check the account before relying on it. Standby Mode: when pausing makes sense
Standby keeps eligible service at up to 500 Kbps for limited connectivity; it is not full broadband, an in-motion plan or a power-saving setting. The account shows the applicable monthly fee. It is useful for keeping a kit ready between trips when that fee is less than another full active month.
| Need | Choose | Cost to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Calls, streaming or regular work | Active service | US starting monthly prices above |
| Occasional low-speed connectivity between trips | Standby, if offered | Account’s Standby fee × paused months |
| Storage in a country with free pause | Country-specific zero-data pause | No connectivity while paused; confirm resume terms |
| Avoid daily battery drain | Switch the dish off | Pausing billing does not switch hardware off |
Compare a season as active months × active monthly price + paused months × your displayed pause fee. Hardware, taxes and Ocean Mode data are separate. No fixed US Standby fee is assumed here because the account and eligibility determine it.
Pause and resume
- Log in, open Subscriptions, select the service line, then Manage → Pause Current Service. Review eligibility and the displayed fee before confirming.
- Request the change before the next bill; the current paid service normally runs through the remaining period. Billing changes use UTC, so do not leave this until local midnight.
- When needed, open Subscriptions → service line → Manage → Resume Service and choose an eligible plan. The upgrade is immediate and prorated; verify connectivity before travel.
Promotional plans, selected rentals and V5 hardware have exclusions. After 12 months in Standby, Starlink may require a paid upgrade, charge a fee or limit service to account access. Business/Enterprise pause options differ, with Aviation excluded.
Country exceptions
Starlink lists free, zero-data pause for Roam/Priority, with no Residential pause, in Austria, Bangladesh, Benin, Botswana, Costa Rica, DR Congo, Eswatini, Ghana, Hungary, Jordan, Kenya, Liechtenstein, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Oman, Qatar, Somalia, South Sudan, Sri Lanka, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Treat the account-country option as decisive; this is not a promise of free low-speed service.
