Starlink Mini for overlanding

By Roaming Dish Editors. Updated October 23, 2026. How we work these numbers out

Overland trips stack days between recharges, so size the battery for the longest stretch without driving, not for an average day. A Mini wired to 12 V and switched off overnight stretches a 100 Ah battery across several days.

Out 21 W 50 hours left Second battery, 100 Ah lithium 1,280 Wh rated, about 1,152 Wh usable 12 V DC cable, fused about 23 W from the battery, 21 W at the dish Starlink Mini 21 W (25 to 40 W average)

1,280 Wh × 90% usable × 92% for 12 V DC ÷ 21 W = about 50 hours of email and maps. The dish's draw is from its spec sheet. The two percentages are our estimates.

Days, not hours

Divide the hours in the table by the hours a day you keep the dish on. At four hours a day of light use, a 100 Ah battery lasts well over a week of evenings with nothing else drawing from it.

Driving refills the battery through a DC-DC charger if your build has one. Sitting at camp for a few days is when the battery size matters. Write down the battery percentage each evening for the first trip and you will know your real daily use better than any calculator.

Mounting and sealing

The Mini roof rack mount fits bars 12 to 48 mm thick and up to 88 mm wide, not round bars. Measure your rack before ordering. Mini accessories guide

For dust and rain, run the DC power cable and keep the Starlink plug in the port. That combination is what the IP67 rating covers. Mini spec sheet

Borders

Land in-motion rules vary and specialist guidance restricts additional markets including Costa Rica, Colombia and Spain. Confirm the precise plan/hardware/country authorization before driving online. Roam 100GB and 300GB are limited to the home country or eligible grouped region. Starlink specialized in-motion rules

Data on long trips

Roam 300GB at $80 a month covers most overland use inside the US and Canada. Crossing into Mexico or Central America needs Roam Unlimited at $175, which also lifts the data cap. Prices checked October 18, 2026. Starlink Roam page

Billing is in one-month steps, and Standby Mode keeps the account alive between expeditions for a small fee, so full service charges can be reduced during storage. Check account-specific Standby fees and pause exceptions.
